Product Description

Wedge Prisms, Laser Beam Steering Prisms, Risley prisms

Overview:

Wedge prisms also known as Risley prisms are prisms with a small angle between the input and output surfaces. The wedge prisms deflect light toward its thicker portion through a beam deviation ranging from 1° to 10°.

For a small angle α between the prism surfaces, the obtained beam deflection angle is approximately (n − 1) α, where n is the refractive index of the prism. For a typical glass prism, where the refractive index is around 1.5, the deflection angle is about half the prism angle.

The wedge prism is ideal for laser beam steering applications. They can be used individually or in combination with another wedge prism for beam steering.

By rotating one wedged prism, light can be steered to trace the circle defined by 2 times the specified deviation angle.

When both wedges are rotated, the beam can be moved anywhere within the circle defined by 4 times the specified deviation angle.
