Overzicht: Optische isolator is een combinatie van een Polarizing Beamsplitter Cube (PBS) en een Quartz Quarter Waveplate.Invallend licht wordt lineair gepolariseerd door PBS en omgezet in circulaire polarisatie door de kwartgolfplaat wanneer het licht er voor het eerst doorheen gaat.Elk deel van de uitkomende bundel die wordt teruggekaatst in de isolator en een tweede keer door de kwartgolfplaat gaat, zal worden omgezet in een lineair gepolariseerde bundel die loodrecht op de ingangsbundel staat.Deze straal wordt dan geblokkeerd door PBS en keert niet terug naar het oorspronkelijke invoerpad van het systeem.
